Bi Coastal Butter

In an effort to continue the partnership Pamela and I began at the fateful Wine and Stinky Cheese Party over shared past interests, I am beginning a new blog in which Pamela will join me in writing about something. We didn't quite get to deciding what exactly it will focus on. Likely there will be food and gossip.

What we did decide on was a name with a lovely origin.

Pamela and I also forged a friendship over a love of books. One of the great books she gave me was a memoir called Service Included by Phoebe Damrosh. Phoebe found herself living in Brooklyn working at a restaurant because she loved food. She got an amazing job at one of the fanciest most expensive restaurants in New York City. She tells us the story of working there. I never would have eaten there had I not read this book. She talks about the meticulous care given to every aspect of the restaurant theatrical experience. She talks about the drama and the gossip. It is a technical theatre foodie's dream come true.

We both read this book, we both loved this book. We talked about it a lot, and one day we even talked about going to the restaurant described so well. But I have to tell you something. It's costs a lot to eat as Per Se. I am talking $275 For a 9 course meal. Not including wine. But we decided to go. We COMMITTED. We saved, we planned, we pushed back the date. And finally after 6 months of talk, we went to Per Se for dinner in May of 2009. It was amazing. One of the best experiences I have had in my lifetime, for sure.

Our waiter was a handsome debonair man. I don't remember his name for the life of me, but I remember how he came and went casually from our table taking our order, bringing us food and poetry on food. After they brought the bread around the butter soon followed. Dude told us all about the butter. How one was from New York, and sweet and the cows blah blah something. The other was from California near the blah blah valley and the cows something something and it was salted with sea salt from someplace. They were both to die for. And thus the name was coined: bicoastal butter.

So now I am moving to California, and Pamela and I won't be eating lunch together much. *tear*
So we're going to bicoastally blog.
xoxo
